my stocking, of course, is the leopard print.
we did pay a visit to the local garden center to check out some christmas stuff. i realized that i do have some personal christmas decorations, but they're mostly all for boog, and i didn't really have anything that was distinctly *me*. so, i remedied that with my own little contributions to the decor.
i really wasn't into nutcrackers at all until i saw this guy. and obviously i had to have him. the peg leg slays me. and he has a hook. a hook! he is now on the mantle plundering the rest of the nutcracker collection. i love him.
then i found this little dangling bit of awesomeness. i mean,. come on. it's even in blue.D has, like, eleventy billion bins of christmas stuff. some of it was just random stuff that he picked up, some of it has some family history behind it, as we all have. after picking through everything and deciding what we wanted to keep, he showed me some truly kickass things.
i should probably note that both of D's parents died some years ago. i do, however, enjoy the stories that D tells me about them. D actually moved in with his parents for their last remaining years to take care of them. some of their household things are still around here. there is a ziploc plastic container that has ant stickers all over it courtesy of his dad. it is the funniest thing ever and i love using it for lunch.
then there's the stuff his mom made.
observe:

the snowflakes. i am in love with these things. can you tell what they're made from? those would be the plastic rings from 6-packs of beer.
then D pulled out this little metal box. in it were small dolls handmade by his mom to represent D and his family.

D, being the youngest, is the one alll the way to the right. his brothers are in the middle, his mom's in the skirt, and his dad is on the left. now, you're probably saying "aw, how cute" and moving on to the next entry on your friends list. humor me - just take a closer look at those dolls and try to figure out just exactly what they're made from. and if you can't figure it out, hover your pointer over the image.
something tells me she and i would have gotten along splendidly.
While we were there I popped into the book store to pick up a paperback. I noticed a sign that said they were having a book drive for kids who are spending Christmas in Children's hospital. Guys, I am a complete sucker for these things so I had to buy at least one book. It's a good thing I'm on a cash diet now because I probably would have gone overboard. Instead I picked out "The Cat Who Thought He Was a Mouse", Delia's favorite Little Golden Book.
When I took my books up to pay I told the cashier that I didn't need a bag and the Little Golden Book was a donation for their book drive. She looked very surprised and pleased by this. She grinned and thanked me for the donation. Then, as she was scanning my items, she asked if I had a coupon. I didn't and answered such. She replied, "Yes, you do. I'll make sure you do." She proceeded to punch in a coupon code that gave me a discount on my highest priced book. How awesome is that? It's not something I expected or asked for but it really made my day.

Eric still hasn't noticed the new guinea pig. I'm kind of curious to see how long it will take. I left the door open while I was in and out filling their water bottles while he was upstairs. He passed by the room and all 4 of the girls were right at the front of the cage eating veggies. The thing is, he doesn't care at all about the guinea pigs and tends to be rather unaware of them except when Delia drags him over. It could take a while before he discovers her.
I had to run errands tonight and went to The Home Depot, Michael's, Petco, Old Navy and Kroger in just about 2 hours. Not bad at all, really. As much as I hate grocery shopping it really is more efficient for me to go once a week. When I tried to do it all once or twice a month I ended up buying too much we didn't need and not enough of what we did.
Speaking of spending more wisely, I'm going on an all cash diet and gave Eric my debit card. I already cut up my credit card so this means no plastic at all for me. I'm OK with that. If I really need to I can drive to the bank and get money. That being such a pain in the butt will keep me from just taking out a couple extra bucks here and there. If I can't get to it then I can't spend it. Right now I'm too unaware of what I'm spending and I need to get myself in the habit of paying attention. The funny thing is that I decided to go on a cash diet after watching a few episodes of "The Bank of Mom and Dad" which is a show about young women ridiculously in debt. Eric wonders why I watch stupid reality TV, but "Clean House" motivated me to get rid of a ton of items and make $1000 at my garage sale. "What Not To Wear" is helping me pay more attention to what I buy which has made me look and feel better about myself. Now I'm motivated to get my spending under control. You just can't complain about that.
On that note, I'm rather scornful when it comes to self-help books and I don't know why. I know many of them work and there's a lot of good that comes from them. Still, I guess it comes down to those people who read one and become zealots. Kind of like the Tony Robbins chick at my garage sale. It weirds me out. However, using reality television to change your life is somehow OK. *shrug* Whatever works, I suppose.

You know, it's interesting to me that I'm kind of good at coming up with a diagnosis. I find the symptoms of disease interesting and I guess I have more than a few stored in my head. It's probably one of the reasons my mom has repeatedly tried to convince me I'd be a good doctor. I disagree because I have no interest at all in treating patients. I guess if I could be a cranky diagnostician like House it would be OK. Or a medical examiner might fit me too. But actually taking care of sick people sounds horrible to me.
So while I'm all Yay! because I was right about her disease I think it sucks hard that she has to have surgery. Especially now. My mom's really into Christmas so it's pretty bad timing. I wonder if we'll be going to their house for the holidays after all. I'm not into dragging kids around from place to on Christmas. It's a headache and makes the day stressful rather than fun. However, I think I can make an exception in this case. It would break my mom's heart to miss Delia on Christmas, you know.
I just called their house and spoke to my dad. I was going to recommend they go up to the hospital to get her checked out today, but they're already on their way. *whew*

Today Delia and I went to the chiropractor. Then we finally got over to the shelter to drop off the toys. I dug around in the garage and found a big truck Delia never opened so I added that to the pile. After all, she already has 2 big trucks in her outdoor toy bin. I also found a paint-your-own chalkboard kit from Melissa & Doug that I found unopened at the thrift store. Into the bag it went. As well as 4 sets of Little People and a talking Plex doll that I decided not to give Delia after all. She already has a Plex doll and she doesn't play with her singing Foofa at all. We ended up with 2 of the large Toys R Us bags full of stuff to take and they seemed happy with it. Still, it would be nice to do more. They looked like they still need a lot of toys. So, if you're in the area and you want to donate you can check their wish list for ideas.
After we left the shelter we went out to Pet Supplies Plus on Telegraph to pick up our new guinea pig. Delia decided we should call her Buttons so that's her new name. She suggested the names Lady and Grandpa first, but Buttons is the one that stuck. She came from Tiny Paws rescue and seems like a really sweet pig. She lived alone and is a little intimidated by our herd, but there hasn't been any blood flying so I'm sure it will turn out find. Now I just need to figure out a way to tell Eric about her. I mean, he probably wouldn't notice for a month if I just didn't say anything, but I don't want to hide her like I did something wrong. I didn't think to tell him when he first came home and now it feels all awkward. The thing is, I know he doesn't like having pets. Any pets. So I know he won't be happy about it, but since he doesn't feed, water or clean up after them he really has nothing to complain about, you know? Oh, well. I'll tell him, he'll be cranky and life will resume its normal rhythm.
12:19 isn't feeling well. #
